We are considering moving to Invercargill, the rents seem reasonable and more numerous, there seem to be quite a few jobs around.Whats it like to live there does anyone know.Whats the weather like! What suburbs are nice, or which ones to stay away from!Is there still a gang problem there! etc etc.Would really appreciate some input. Thanks

cold, redneck, dull etc
but if you're into that sort of thing (and you must know its cheap for a reason) then north of the city centre is probably the way to go from memory. richmond and windsor are good suburbs

We love living here! Its laid back. As for being dull. life is what you make it.

So what are the summers like, are they shorter, colder than than Christchurch, does it snow much, rain lots, are winter;s freezing!
I don't mind there not being lots of nightlife or whatever, I agree ^^^ life is what you make it, and cheap is not necessarily bad.Laid back sounds nice.
Thanks for the input, hope there's mroe to come

The only place that I know of thats worse is here in Christchurch. This is a real sh.thole now.Invercargill is better than this.

Invercargill has changed a lot for the better in the last 10 years or so. Avoid living in south city and jobs aren't all that plentiful. other than that it's pretty good. We don't get REALLY cold winters, get maybe one dump of snow a year, however winter hangs around a long time and it's often quite wet and dreary. Summer is nothing like Chch, often mid 20's is as high as it gets

Born and bred Southlander, left about three years ago-the winters are cold the artic wind goes right through you, summer is good it doesnt get as hot as Chch but when you do get one you make the most of it, everyone is out doing stuff on those days. People are great really friendly and the job market is good as long as you have the skills, rent is cheap, and it is best to avoid South Invercargill, but in saying that some of the South suburbs are not too bad. There was a gang problem but I think that has settled down, Invercargill is a real community based city, when they have something going on everyone seems to get involved.

agrees.

I love Invercargill. I moved here from Canterbury 2 months ago. The weather has been wonderful. The only thing I don't like about Southland is the cold wind when it strikes. But other than thatI have no complaints. I love the shops and the people are very friendly and laid back.
Houses are much cheaper so I was able to buy a house outright here.
Everyone says the North side is best but I have found living on the South side really nice. There are undesirables in every area so check out the whole street before you commit to a place. There are a lot of students around South City apparently so that can be noisy.
There is not a lot of work but if you have the right skills you could be lucky.I get new jobs emailed to me daily from TM, Rapido, and I check the WINZ website.
You have nothing to lose- take a chance and come down.

I live in Invercargill at present but I'm thinking of moving to Christchurch after I have had my short term health problem fixed. Keep away from Appleby suburb cos its a shit-hole.

teddy1955, May 8, 2012, 10:07 am

Appleby's not great! Any other suburbs that aren't the safest or quietest!Thinking of moving there as well. Also.what's the public transport system like! Cheers guys!^_^

ningnomaningnon, May 8, 2012, 10:35 am

Just steer clear of south city in general and you'll avoid the worst areass PT is a bit average, free day time buses will be canned soon, my wife buses to work and needs to leave an hour early to get there with one connection. no very early or late buses

a.woodrow, May 8, 2012, 10:40 am

If you have kids Hawthorndale is out of the main drag, We live here and its soo quiet, our kids can play on the street safely without cars going down every 2 mins. Windsor, rosedale areas are more expensive and the streets seem a bit smaller. It all depends on what you want out of your suburb.

angeldrawers, May 8, 2012, 10:45 am

Grasmere and Waikiwi also family friendly areas.but I'd sayGladstone,Windsor ,Rosedale and some parts of Waverleyare the better areas. The Invercargill city Council are trying hard to stop the division of areas desirability.but its always been the case North Invercargill is the better areas. Windsor has a great shopping area, no need to go intothe central city nowadays.

jbsouthland, May 8, 2012, 10:51 am

Lived there for 18 years, yes, the wind cuts right through you, nothing a good jacket doesn't fix. Any place has its pluses and minuses. I moved to Dunedin to do my study and the wind in Dunedin is worse than Invercargill by a mile. A place is as good as you make it. Southland has had the most amazing weather in the last 6 months. No complaints here.

thanks for the feedback, my husband is a sheetmetal fabricator, and often there is that everywhere, we would need a job to make the move, but it seems the possibilities outweigh the downsides.Might be worth making a concerted effort to make the move.Maybe a holiday in the area first to get a good look around. The laid back friendly people and quieter lifestyle do sound nice

stillwaters, May 8, 2012, 12:06 pm

There will definatley be a job down there for him, you could try Sheetmetal Craft.

breandme, May 8, 2012, 12:52 pm

havve always wanted to combine my artistic trends with his sheetmetal expertise, love some of the sheetmetal art around, maybe if life wasn't so stressed all the time there would be room again for creativity, wouldn't that be lovely!
